Sewing in Queensland!

by Colleen Whittaker, Queensland State Liaison Officer, Australian Sewing Guild.

With this vast state in Australia, it takes hours to travel the state of Queensland by car. I am always amazed when people say "You are in Brisbane! Mackay is not that far away!".  When you sit down and think about the distance, yes it is far away; a day and half drive in a car, and Townsville and Cairns are two days away by car!

In my new role as SLO, distance means I can't visit as many groups as I would like, especially as I work full time and getting time off work is not always easy.  However, I am endeavouring to contact everyone by email as a starting point!

Through my contact with neighbourhood groups, I have pulled together items of interest - things happening in groups all over Queensland in the near future!

Sew Much 2 Sew (my group, based in Albany Creek) is meeting at a Community Hall in Strathpine as we outgrew our Hall at Albany Creek. The group recently held a sewing display at the Albany Creek Library about the past and present of sewing . For the month of April the group is having Sue Marriott who is a Style and Image Consultant and will be working with the members who wish to know their colours on the day.

Sue is adjusting the fit of this dress that Pam Gravenor bought along to the workshop. We shortened the sleeves took the collar away etc.  Pam will go away and do some unpicking to revamp her dress to wear again.
For the month of June, the Bulimba Belles NGC will be sewing for their charity which helps out women suffering from domestic violence.

Sew Much More at The Gap had Martyn Smith’s Pant Fitting Workshop in April. A large group of people attended the day, and learnt many skills and tips for future pants making. There are a few of members participating in the Guild's Castaway to Couture competition.

The Winter Bribie Island Retreat is on again in June this year, registrations are now open. This is a very popular weekend and all the ladies and gentlemen love going to share and work together on their various projects. It is a weekend away from home, where you are waited on by the ladies of the CWA who do the wonderful catering. All the attendees have a great weekend away.

Cairns are holding the ASG's Annual Convention from 10 to 13 October at the Hilton Hotel in Cairns. Please check the website for details on registrations. The challenge this year is “Put a Wrinkle in it”, check the website for further details. There are plenty of categories for all attendees to enter. We strongly encourage a large number of entries, your imagination can run wild.

Queensland has a number of regions, Brisbane North and, South, Darling Downs, Far North Queensland, Gold Coast and Suncoast. Brisbane South Region is holding an Industry Day on 30 July 2016. Plans are well underway for a superb day out for both Brisbane North and South Members. Keep checking the website for further details.
